Schools in County Kerry participated in the nationwide Gum Litter Taskforce roadshow this week, radiokerry.ie reported. The educational initiative visited Colaiste Gleann Li and St Mary’s CBS The Green in Tralee. Tralee Today also reported that the tour made visits to schools in Tralee. [1][2]
The campaign features an anti litter show called Bin It, which uses storytelling and interactive performances to deliver its message to students across Ireland, according to radiokerry.ie. Research cited by the outlet shows that 82 percent of young people consider littering socially unacceptable, but only 61 percent recognize chewing gum as litter. [1]
The current roadshow builds on a previous tour that reached about 6,000 students across 63 primary and secondary schools last year, radiokerry.ie reported. Tralee is the county town of County Kerry and recorded a population of 26,079 in the 2022 census. [1][5]
The educational effort comes after local enforcement actions against waste and litter in the county. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Kerry County Council investigated 386 waste complaints and 422 litter complaints between January and August, leading to four court convictions and fines totaling 4,520 euros.
