Protests and school blockades have spread across France as trade unions and teachers joined nationwide student demonstrations over poor educational conditions. The New York Times and Reuters reported that riot police clashed with protesters during the largest day of demonstrations so far. According to Wake Up Singapore, up to 500 high schools were closed as demonstrators threw fireworks at police. [1][8][10][11]

The demonstrations intensified following severe injuries during recent clashes. CBC and Morocco World News reported that a teenage student lost a hand from a police grenade. Additionally, Tasnim reported that violent student protests have extended beyond France into neighboring Belgium. [2][3][9]

The demonstrations began on 21 September 2026 in the Créteil academy. Students launched blockades over missing teachers, overcrowded classes of up to 35 pupils, dilapidated school buildings, and high temperatures during heatwaves. Official figures from the French Interior Ministry show that 1,949 people were arrested on 1 October after demonstrations involved arson and clashes. As FTMQ News reported earlier, trade unions subsequently called for broader support across the country. [12][14][15]

Teachers and trade unions joined the walkouts to protest against education funding cuts and inequality within the French school system. Student organizations, including the Union Syndicale Lycéenne, have demanded better classroom resources and structural reforms. The New York Times and streamlinefeed.co.ke reported that union involvement has significantly expanded the scale of the nationwide movement. [1][8][10][13]
