Primary school teachers who belong to the Irish National Teachers' Organisation began work-to-rule action today over an ongoing public sector pay dispute, The Journal reported. The union represents more than 48,000 members and is the largest teachers' trade union in Ireland. [1]

The industrial action is part of a broader dispute involving more than 100,000 public sector workers, according to The Journal. As part of the work-to-rule, primary school teachers will cease working additional hours known as Croke Park hours. [1]

These Croke Park hours required teachers to supervise children before and after class time, The Journal reported. Under the agreement, primary school teachers were required to work an additional 36 hours per school year. [1]

A teacher is a person who helps students acquire knowledge, competence, or virtue through teaching. [2]
