The Irish government has dropped its target to introduce a living wage by 2029, drawing strong criticism from trade unions. According to the Irish Examiner, the Department of Enterprise announced the removal of the deadline on Budget Day, claiming the move would help provide certainty for employers. [1]

Enterprise minister Peter Burke stated that the 2029 living wage timeline had been annulled. The Irish Examiner reported that he asked the Low Pay Commission to take due cognisance of the decision. In response, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions criticized the minister's correspondence and likened the government's policy approach to that of Donald Trump. [1]

Concerns have been raised by trade union representatives that the government commitment to establishing a living wage will now be left to wither on the vine. Public policy generally encompasses institutional proposals, laws, and regulations designed by governments to address social issues such as employment and economics. [1][10]

The decision to drop the binding deadline was officially delivered as part of the Irish government's Budget 27 measures. Union leaders continue to voice opposition to the annulment of the planned 2029 implementation date. [1]
