Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced an independent review into the murder of 18-year-old student Henry Nowak, BBC News reported on 26 October. The Mirror, Politics Home, AOL.co.uk, and the Oxford Mail also reported the announcement. Mahmood stated that authorities must discover what happened before, during, and after that awful night, according to BBC News. [1][3][4][5][6]

Nowak was fatally stabbed in Southampton in December by Vickrum Digwa, BBC News reported. Digwa falsely claimed that he had been racially abused and had acted in self-defence. He was jailed for life on 1 June, with a minimum term of 21 years. [1]

Following the murder, police bodycam footage showing Nowak being handcuffed as he lay dying led to intense scrutiny of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, BBC News reported. The footage also sparked wider debates surrounding knife laws, race, policing, and public trust. The student's family welcomed the review, according to BBC News and The Mirror. [1][4]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, Digwa's mother, Kiran Kaur, was jailed for three years in July for removing the murder weapon. She is set to be released from prison early under a government scheme designed to reduce prison overcrowding, while the Home Office considers her for deportation from the United Kingdom. [7]
