Travelodge hotel staff let strangers into guest rooms 60 times, according to an independent review reported by the Daily Mail. The findings follow a December 2022 incident in Maidenhead where 29-year-old Kyran Smith lied to a receptionist to obtain a key card to a colleague's room. [1]

The Daily Mail reported that Smith claimed to be the woman's boyfriend to gain entry. He subsequently sexually assaulted her in her bed and was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison in February. [1]

Hotel staff did not take immediate internal action at the time of the assault, beyond providing CCTV footage to police officers, the Daily Mail said. [1]

Travelodge opened its first UK hotel in Staffordshire in 1985 as a budget hotel chain. By 2024, the company operated across the United Kingdom and planned further expansions in the UK and Spain. [4]
