A High Court judge is set to issue a ruling on a legal challenge against the ban of the Drumcree parade in Portadown. BBC News reported that Mr Justice Scoffield said he would rule on the case on Wednesday. The legal action was brought by a Portadown Orangeman against Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant and Police Service of Northern Ireland Chief Constable Jon Boutcher. [1][2]
The parade was banned following an intervention by Sir Chris Bryant. According to BBC News, Sir Chris acted to stop the march after receiving security advice from Chief Constable Boutcher. [1]
The dispute around Drumcree involves a standoff in Portadown between Orangemen and nationalist residents living on the Garvaghy Road, which BBC News reported lasted almost two weeks. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the Northern Ireland secretary banned the march after the Parades Commission had approved an application for 35 Orangemen to walk the route without a band. [1][7][8]
The Orange Order is a Protestant fraternal organisation based in Northern Ireland that historically supports Irish unionism. The annual Drumcree dispute centres on traditional parade routes through predominantly Catholic and nationalist areas of Portadown. [4][5]
