The monster movie Godzilla Minus Zero has become the first Japanese film made specifically for IMAX, UPI reported. The film was written and directed by Oscar winner Takashi Yamazaki, who also supervised the visual effects. Crunchyroll and IMDb both report that the feature set a record for the highest opening day gross for a live-action film in Japan. [1][6][7][8]

Director Takashi Yamazaki told UPI in an interview that live action is an ideal medium for IMAX because of the unprecedented amount of detail that the filming format can capture. Yamazaki added that filmmaker Christopher Nolan sets the standard for what can be achieved in IMAX formats. Deadline reported that the film is eyeing a 60 million dollar global box office opening. [1][5]

The film is a direct sequel to the 2023 release Godzilla Minus One. Set in 1949, the narrative follows postwar Japan as it attempts to rebuild while facing a new threat from King Ghidorah and a regenerated Godzilla. Returning cast members include Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Sakura Ando, and Miou Tanaka, alongside new cast members Min Tanaka, Masami Nagasawa, and Jun Kunimura. [3][8][11]

Toho originally introduced the Godzilla franchise in 1954 with the original film by Ishiro Honda. Godzilla Minus Zero serves as the 39th film in the overall Godzilla franchise and the 34th produced by Toho. Yamazaki previously received an Academy Award for his visual effects work on Godzilla Minus One. [3][8][9][11][12]
