German Chancellor Friedrich Merz began a three-nation tour of Asia on Tuesday in Singapore, Euronews reported. The visit aims to broaden economic ties in the region beyond China, with later stops planned for Japan and South Korea. Speaking after talks with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Merz declared that there were no uncertainties in Europe and promised that investment opportunities would continuously improve under his federal government. The pitch comes amid domestic political pressure in Berlin, according to Euronews. Merz faces rising support for the far right and a recent ministerial resignation, leaving his coalition government on shaky ground. [1]
Merz has served as Chancellor of Germany since May 2025 and has led the Christian Democratic Union since January 2022. Economic concerns across Europe have also been influenced by wider geopolitical and energy strains. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the International Energy Agency warned that global diesel supplies will remain tight into 2027 following disruptions linked to the Iran war, which began in February 2026 when joint United States and Israeli airstrikes targeted Iranian leadership and assets. [4][5][6]
Security arrangements in Europe are also shifting. As FTMQ News previously reported, United States Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker assured European officials that Washington remains committed to the continent, even as the United States reviews plans to withdraw military assets and thousands of troops while pushing European nations to lead their conventional defenses.
