German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on Sunday, October 4, 2026, on an unannounced visit to display support for Ukraine, RTE and The Kyiv Independent reported. In a statement released after his arrival, Merz warned that if Russia is not stopped, its war machine will sooner or later turn against other nations. [1][3][4][5]
Merz said that he travelled to the Ukrainian capital because the country requires full support in the coming weeks, RTE reported. He was joined on the trip by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche, according to government sources cited by RTE. [1]
Nacionale News reported that Merz promised one billion euros in military aid during his trip. However, as FTMQ News reported earlier, Investing.com previously stated that Merz arrived with a 1.35 billion euro aid package. [6][10]
Merz has been the chancellor of Germany since May 2025. Numerous foreign leaders, heads of state, and heads of government have visited Ukraine to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the ongoing war with Russia. [8][10]
