President Donald Trump has rolled back select 50 percent tariffs on Canadian imports, according to the Washington Examiner, AP News, Reuters, The Guardian, CBS News, and rte.ie. The decision is aimed at supporting Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine in her re-election race just days before voters go to the polls. The Guardian and rte.ie reported that the exemptions apply to Canadian agricultural and forestry products. [1][2][3][4][7][10]
The Guardian reported that the White House said the tariffs were dropped to better serve the public interest. According to the Washington Examiner, PBS NewsHour, and rte.ie, Collins is locked in a competitive battle against Democratic challenger Troy Jackson. PBS NewsHour reported that Collins released a statement noting she spoke with United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick about the negative impact tariffs are having on Maine families, businesses, farmers, and growers. [1][4][6][7]
Collins has served as the senior senator for Maine since 1997 and chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Collins previously claimed credit for pushing the administration to grant tariff exemptions for industries in Maine. The United States trade war with Canada began on February 1, 2025, when near-universal tariffs were imposed on Canadian imports. [11][13][15]
The upcoming election will help determine whether Democrats can flip control of Congress, according to The Guardian. Rte.ie noted that the removal of tariffs could directly benefit businesses in Maine. [4][7]
