Fortune reported that Dolly Parton's book gifting program, the Imagination Library, reaches one in seven children under the age of five in the United States. Parton died on August 25, 2026. By the time of her death, the program had gifted more than 332 million books to children across all 50 American states and four other nations. [1]

The free initiative mails one age-appropriate book every month to registered children from birth until they reach five years old. Fortune reported that participants can receive up to 60 books by the time they graduate from the initiative. Each participant receives Watty Piper's "The Little Engine That Could" as their first book. [1]

Funding challenges have developed in at least four states, according to Fortune. As a result of these financial difficulties, Parton's foundation is currently carrying the funding burden for the book program. The initiative operates in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Ireland, in addition to the United States. [1]

Wikipedia describes Parton as an American singer-songwriter, actress, philanthropist, and businesswoman who was dubbed the Queen of Country. Grokipedia notes that she achieved 26 number-one singles on the Billboard country charts and built a business empire that includes the Dollywood theme park. [2][3]
