The fictional character Winnie-the-Pooh has recently reached his centenary, the Washington Examiner reported. Created by English author A. A. Milne, the teddy bear known for his adventures with friends such as Christopher Robin, Piglet, and Eeyore remains a popular figure in children's literature. [1]
The character first appeared by name in a story commissioned by London's Evening News for Christmas Eve in 1925, entitled The Wrong Kind of Bees, as FTMQ News reported earlier. A full collection of stories was subsequently published on October 14, 1926. [2][4]
The character was illustrated by E. H. Shepard and was inspired by a stuffed toy that Milne bought for his son Christopher Robin at the Harrods department store. The creator was also inspired by a real bear named Winnipeg, brought to the London Zoo by Canadian veterinarian Harry Colebourn during World War I. [2][3][4]
The name Pooh was possibly derived from a swan encountered by Christopher Robin. Following its initial release, the series expanded with sequels such as The House at Pooh Corner in 1928 and gained global reach through translations, merchandise, and adaptations by Disney starting in the 1960s. [3]
