A co-pilot on an Israel-bound flight attempted to seize control of the aircraft using a cockpit crash axe, Fortune reported on Saturday. Officials stated that the suspect attacked the flight captain and attempted to take control of the falling aircraft. The United Arab Emirates described the incident as a terrorist attack. [1]

The co-pilot was identified as Hamam al-Hammami, who is an Omani national, according to Fortune. Three people with knowledge of the situation, including a Gulf diplomat and a Western diplomat, confirmed his identity. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. [1]

Prior to the incident, al-Hammami was barred from flying on the national airline of Oman, Fortune reported. Officials took that action because of concerns regarding his extremist views. The United Arab Emirates is currently leading the official investigation into the incident. [1]
