Democrats captured both houses of Congress in the midterm elections following eight months of war with Iran, Fox News reported. Vice President JD Vance attributed the losses of the Republican Party to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. [1]

The election results included Democratic victories in at least seven Senate seats, with flips occurring in Texas, Ohio, Kansas, and Iowa, according to Fox News. Following the defeat, the Daily Mail reported that House Speaker Mike Johnson announced he will not seek the top Republican leadership position next year, initiating a contest for control of the minority caucus. [1][2]

The United States and Israel have been at war with Iran and its regional allies since February 2026. The conflict began when the United States and Israel launched hundreds of air strikes against Iranian targets, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. [7]

The incoming 120th Congress will feature 18 LGBTQ+ Democrats, including two senators, set to take office in 2027, according to the Daily Signal. Separate political movements have also responded to the election outcome; as FTMQ News reported earlier, leaders of the Democratic Socialists of America outlined post midterm priorities to cut military links between the United States and Israel.
