Fraudulent advertisements on Facebook are targeting previous scam victims by falsely offering to recover their lost money, Fox News reported. Meta confirmed that it removed flagged accounts following an internal investigation into the advertisements. [1]
The fraudulent recovery operations use fake Federal Bureau of Investigation profiles to trick users who are searching for help, according to Fox News. A follower named Patrick K alerted reporters to the advertisements after capturing screenshots of suspicious profiles operating on the social media network. [1]
Meta Platforms, Inc. relies almost entirely on revenue from digital advertising, which uses personal data to deliver targeted advertisements. The parent company reported 3.07 billion monthly active Facebook users as of December 31, 2023, while Mark Zuckerberg later stated that the platform maintains more than three billion monthly active users. In the third quarter of 2026, Meta reported that 3.64 billion people used its family of applications daily. [3]
Online fraud operations represent a growing global issue, with scam centers in Cambodia generating an estimated 12.5 billion dollars to 19 billion dollars each year. Those activities are estimated to represent up to 35 percent of the gross domestic product of Cambodia. [2]
