Child dies from measles in New York state

A child in Lewis County, New York, has died after contracting measles, UPI and WRVO Public Media reported. UPI and WIVB News 4 reported that the death marks the first measles-related fatality in New York state in more than 30 years. CGTN reported that New York Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed the death. The New York State Department of Health and Lewis County Public Health issued a joint statement on Monday regarding the death, UPI reported. The agencies extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the child and asked that their privacy be respected, according to UPI. [1]

Health officials warned in the joint statement that measles is a highly contagious disease capable of causing serious complications and death, UPI reported. The state and local agencies emphasized that vaccination provides the best protection against the disease. UPI added that the state health department has offered resources to assist Lewis County. [1]

In January 2025, a separate measles outbreak began in Texas and neighboring states, becoming one of the largest in the country since the United States declared the disease eliminated in 2000. That outbreak was declared over on August 18, 2025. [7]
