Video game developer BioWare has closed after 31 years following poor sales and job cuts at its parent company, Electronic Arts.

Canadian video game developer BioWare is closing down after 31 years of operation, BBC News reported. Parent company Electronic Arts is shutting the studio as part of a wider effort that eliminates 400 jobs across its business, according to BBC News and TechPowerUp. [1][3]

The closure of the developer also means that the upcoming Mass Effect 5 project has been cancelled, Pure Xbox, ThePCEnthusiast, and BBC News reported. BBC News noted that the studio's last two game releases failed to meet sales expectations. [1][2][4]

BioWare was founded on February 1, 1995, in Edmonton, Alberta, by medical doctors Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip. The founders initially planned to create medical simulation software before shifting their focus to developing video games. [1][6]

In an official statement cited by BBC News, BioWare thanked its players for being the most important part of its story throughout its 31-year history. The developer was widely known for creating major role-playing game franchises including Mass Effect and Dragon Age. [1]
