Supermarket chain Wegmans has confirmed it is actively working to open a new location on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The New York Post reported that a company spokesperson confirmed the project to the West Side Rag on Tuesday. The store will occupy a retail space at 1932 Broadway, located between West 64th and 65th streets. [1]
The location previously housed a Bed Bath and Beyond store, which shut down in early 2023 during bankruptcy proceedings and companywide store reductions. Teaser signage for Wegmans was posted at the site in June 2024, but the storefront remained empty for over two years without further announcements. The New York Post reported that spokesperson Mandee Puleo confirmed the company is currently designing the store layout and securing required municipal permits. [1][2]
Wegmans Food Markets began in 1916 when John Wegman opened the Rochester Fruit and Vegetable Company in Rochester, New York. The business continues to operate under family leadership. The chain ranked sixth on Fortune magazine's list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2025. [3]
