Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has returned home to Venezuela after nearly a year in exile to press for a democratic transition, according to reports from Al Jazeera and the Financial Times. Her return comes as the Washington Examiner reported that Venezuela has transformed over the past ten months from a principal adversary of Washington into a country under heavy United States influence. [1][3][5][9]

Upon her return, Machado praised United States President Donald Trump for supporting freedom and urged the nation to hold elections, Al Jazeera reported. She is meeting with the interim president to advocate for free elections, while Reuters, Bloomberg, and The Japan Times reported on growing challenges surrounding Trump's touted record oil deal with the South American nation. [2][3][4][6][9]

The developments follow Operation Absolute Resolve on 3 January 2026, when United States forces launched a military strike in Venezuela. U.S. forces bombed military infrastructure and captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas before transporting them to New York City to face drug trafficking charges. [7]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio scheduled a visit to Texas to accept a tanker carrying 1 million barrels of Venezuelan crude oil to showcase efforts to lower fuel prices. The European Union has called Machado's return an opportunity for Venezuela to move toward free and fair elections. [8][9]
