An alliance of Venezuelan opposition parties reaffirmed its support for exiled leader Maria Corina Machado on Sunday, October 18, 2026. Members of the Unitary Democratic Platform met in Caracas and agreed to recognize and support her leadership, Al Jazeera reported. The decision was also confirmed by WION, Jamaica Observer, Ahram Online, and Yahoo. [1][2][3][4][5]

The opposition coalition renewed its demand for free elections in Venezuela following disputed presidential votes in 2018 and 2024, Al Jazeera said. Demócrata reported that Machado proposed July 24, 2027, as the date for new presidential elections in the country. [1][6]

The coalition published 14 proposals for a democratic transition in Venezuela, according to Al Jazeera. The proposals include freedom for political parties, the release of all political prisoners, and the safe return of political exiles. [1]

Machado served in the National Assembly of Venezuela from 2011 to 2014 and has been an opposition leader against the administrations of Hugo Chavez, Nicolas Maduro, and Delcy Rodriguez. She won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. In January 2026, United States forces launched a military operation that captured Maduro and transported him to New York City to face drug trafficking charges.
