The United States military has carried out limited strikes against Iranian targets on Qeshm Island, according to reports by UPI, Euronews, and RTE. Iranian state media reported explosions on the island, located in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Unnamed United States officials stated that the military action targeted Iranians who were using surface to air missiles against American assets. [1][2][3][4]

American officials cited by RTE and Euronews described the action as defensive measures rather than a resumption of major combat operations. Iranian state media outlet IRNA reported five explosions on Qeshm Island. An earlier report by Arab News noted an Iranian official claimed United States forces attacked fishing boats off the island. [1][2][3][12]

The military action occurred on the eve of midterm elections in the United States. UPI noted that President Donald Trump previously stated on Oct. 8 that the United States would not attack Iran before the elections. Euronews reported that President Trump signaled progress in diplomatic negotiations with Tehran just hours before the strikes occurred, stating that Iran wants a settlement as soon as possible. [1][2]

The conflict began after the United States and Israel attacked in late February, as UPI reported. Iran has since used military force to restrict traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which serves as a vital energy shipping route. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Qeshm Island is the largest island in the Persian Gulf and holds an underground missile facility. [1][13]
