The United States government announced a fresh round of sanctions on Thursday targeting Iran's shadow fleet of vessels, according to UPI. The measures target networks involved in transporting and trading Iranian petroleum and petrochemical products, as well as buyers of those products. [1]
The State Department sanctioned 10 entities, six individuals, and five vessels, UPI reported. At the same time, the Treasury Department blacklisted 17 vessels. The Trump administration stated that proceeds from these petroleum sales fund malign activities. [1]
International sanctions against Iran include punitive economic and diplomatic measures imposed by the United Nations, the United States, and the European Union across successive decades. Iran was the most heavily sanctioned country in the world until Russia surpassed it after invading Ukraine in 2022. [2]
The actions follow wider instability in the Middle East. As FTMQ News reported earlier, fluctuating crude oil prices recently stirred global energy supply anxieties, with the International Energy Agency calling the market disruption the largest supply disruption in global oil history. [4]
