United Nations goodwill ambassador Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has urged international partners to help Ukraine keep the lights on ahead of the upcoming winter. Speaking from Ukraine to Euronews Europe Editor Maria Tadeo, the Danish actor highlighted the severe conditions facing millions of residents who live without electricity for hours and lack home heating. [1][2]
During his visit to the country, Coster-Waldau was forced to take shelter in the Kyiv metro system following an air raid threat, according to a report by Roya News. The United Nations Development Programme also reiterated his call to secure emergency support to address urgent energy infrastructure demands before the colder weather sets in. [2][3]
In his interview, Coster-Waldau acknowledged that the United Nations requires internal reform, but he maintained that the international institution still plays a vital role. Coster-Waldau achieved his acting breakthrough in the 1994 Danish film Nightwatch and later gained international acclaim playing Jaime Lannister in the fantasy drama series Game of Thrones. [1][4]
The urgent request comes amid growing concern over the stability of Ukraine's power network as winter approaches. As FTMQ News reported earlier, energy stability remains a critical concern after recent military strikes caused severe disruptions to power and heating infrastructure across major metropolitan areas, including Kyiv.
