United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza ahead of the third anniversary of the 7 October 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel, RTE reported. Mr Guterres stated that it is time for the ceasefire to become permanent, to allow humanitarian assistance at scale, and to respect international law. He urged for a political path toward lasting peace across the entire region. [1]

The upcoming anniversary has prompted reactions and planned events in several countries. According to The Jerusalem Post, police in London have urged students to reschedule a pro-Palestinian march planned for 7 October. At least six pro-Palestine protests are planned across Europe on the day of the anniversary. The Guardian reported that Australian leaders have condemned planned pro-Palestine vigils scheduled during Jewish commemorations marking the anniversary. [3][4][5]

Research highlighted by The Guardian indicates that British Jews have become more likely to identify as Zionist and feel a close attachment to Israel since the 2023 attacks. The percentage of British Jews who feel very emotionally attached to Israel rose to 51 percent in June 2025. [5][6]
