Ministers in the United Kingdom are planning a consultation to regulate the dockless e-bike industry, according to the Guardian. The Department for Transport will lead the effort to establish national standards, aiming to prevent e-bikes from blocking public pavements and to address antisocial behaviour such as running red lights. [1]

The proposed national rules will consider parking standards, fleet sizes, and insurance requirements for operators, the Guardian reported. The national framework aims to replace the current patchwork of separate agreements negotiated between individual bike-sharing companies and local councils. [1]

Issues surrounding unregulated transport on public roads have drawn attention elsewhere. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Irish agriculture minister Martin Heydon raised concerns over unregulated horse-drawn vehicles in Ireland, where no national legislation currently regulates such transport on public roads.
