Agriculture minister Martin Heydon has expressed concern over the issue of horse-drawn vehicles on public roads in Ireland, irishexaminer.com reported. The Irish Examiner said there is currently no national legislation or dedicated system to regulate horse-drawn vehicles on public roads in Ireland. [1]
According to the Irish Examiner, the Fine Gael minister described the situation as complex. The Dáil heard warnings that a Wild West situation had developed, with carriage drivers who follow old by-laws operating alongside unregulated drivers. [1]
To address these concerns, Mr Heydon has contacted transport minister Darragh O'Brien and justice minister Jim O'Callaghan, the Irish Examiner reported. A working group of senior officials from the three government departments has met to scope out the issues. [1]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, other international jurisdictions have also addressed carriage regulations. New York City officials recently agreed on legislation to phase out Central Park horse-drawn carriages by June 2028 due to safety concerns. [3][4]
