Developer Stockland confirmed on Saturday that it has cancelled plans to build an artificial intelligence data centre in Sydney, the Daily Mail reported. The project was slated for the former site of the Kogarah Golf Course along the Cooks River. The decision follows community protests against the development on the banks of the waterway. [1]
The Cooks River was identified in March as the most contaminated coastal waterway in New South Wales following an Australian-first microplastic assessment, according to the Daily Mail. Stockland had proposed constructing one of the largest logistics and technology precincts in Sydney at the location. The broader proposal included commercial facilities, warehouses, and restaurants alongside the planned data centre. [1]
Sydney serves as the primary financial and economic hub of Australia, generating a gross regional product of 581.65 billion Australian dollars in 2024 and 2025. Stockland currently has seven other potential sites flagged despite abandoning the Cooks River project, the Daily Mail reported. [1][3]
