Finland has ordered work on two Google data centre sites to be halted until mandatory environmental impact assessments are completed. Euronews, the BBC, and Quartz reported that the Finnish authorities ordered Tuike Finland, representing Google, to suspend all preparatory measures that would significantly alter the environment. [1][8][11]

The Finnish Supervisory Agency stated that the halt must take effect no later than 23 October 2026 for the planned data centre projects, including a site in Muhos. Quartz reported that the suspension is related to forest clearing activities at the locations. [1][11]

According to Euronews, Google announced a 13 billion euro investment in digital infrastructure in Finland in September to support its artificial intelligence plans. Google described the project as its largest single investment in Europe. [1]

Al Jazeera reported that Finnish opposition politicians have raised concerns regarding potential power shortages and rising energy prices caused by data centre operations. [5]
