Russian drone strike injures five people in Kharkiv

Five people, including a four-year-old child, were injured in an overnight Russian drone attack on Kharkiv on Tuesday, 27 October. Euronews and Yahoo News Canada both reported that five civilians were injured in the strike. The Kyiv Post noted that four people were wounded in the initial hit, including the four-year-old boy. Euronews reported that a Russian jet-powered drone struck the Osnovianskyi district of the city late on Tuesday evening. According to Ukraine's State Emergency Service, cited by Euronews, the resulting fires spread across approximately 2,500 square metres. The blaze engulfed an apartment block, private homes, outbuildings, and three industrial premises, while also damaging nearby tower blocks, garages, and vehicles. [1]

Firefighters had to work to extinguish the blazes under the constant threat of additional Russian strikes, Euronews reported. The Kyiv Post and Gwara Media reported that Russian forces also attacked a publisher's warehouse in Kharkiv during the same period. [1][8][9][10]

Kharkiv is the second-largest city in Ukraine and serves as the administrative center of Kharkiv Oblast in the northeast of the country. Prior to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, the city had an estimated population of more than 1.4 million residents. [14]
