The Guardian and Irish Legal News report that defence barrister Ian Winter KC has reported himself to his professional regulator following an encounter with Sunday Times journalist Rosamund Urwin. The incident took place shortly after 51-year-old comedian and actor Russell Brand was convicted at Southwark Crown Court on November 5 of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. [1][2][4][10]

According to the Guardian, Winter confronted Urwin, whose investigative reporting led to Brand's victims coming forward, and told her, "I hope you are pleased with yourself." Urwin replied that she was pleased justice had been done, to which Winter responded, "Well". Brand was acquitted of two other rape charges and an attempted indecent assault, as NME reported. [1][4]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, Winter had previously delivered his closing argument at Southwark Crown Court, telling jurors that 2023 media reports had poisoned the well of justice against Brand. Brand was raised in Essex and rose to prominence as a host on Big Brother's Big Mouth before starring in Hollywood films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall. [13][15][16]

NME and BBC News report that the Metropolitan Police are investigating Brand over additional rape allegations from two more women, with police sharing historic interview footage. NME reports that Brand will return to Southwark Crown Court to be sentenced on Monday, November 9, with the judge warning that he faces a significant prison sentence. [4][5][7]
