Demonstrators gathered and fires were lit at several places in Paris on Sunday, Oct. 18, as tension remained high following days of violent nationwide unrest. Euronews and Al Jazeera reported that the gatherings occurred alongside continuing demonstrations over high living costs and school conditions. Near Place de la République, emergency services extinguished a fire while video footage showed people looting a clothing store and setting bicycles alight. [1][2]

Violent behavior and looting hit stores across Paris, according to reports from Euronews and the South China Morning Post. The Guardian reported that total arrests connected to the demonstrations have reached 1,800, with entire streets in Paris suffering damage. The interior minister stated that the French Republic will not yield to the unrest. [1][3][7]

The unrest began on Sept. 18, 2026, when high school students started demonstrations and blockades in Créteil, a commune in the Paris suburbs. As FTMQ News reported earlier, over half a million people joined protests across France against rising inflation, leading to clashes that injured at least 150 police officers and caused damage including a roof collapse at the Limoges town hall. [11][12][13]

Despite the violence, the National Football League announced that it will proceed with its planned American football game in France. CBS Sports and Fox News reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers will play the New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis on Oct. 25 as scheduled. [4][5][6]
