Violent clashes between police and protesters erupted in Paris and other French cities on Saturday after half a million people marched against soaring inflation. Euronews reported that looters stripped dozens of shops bare, set multiple fires, and left one demonstrator with a blown off hand. The unrest follows weeks of student demonstrations as France prepares for elections in six months. [1]
French President Emmanuel Macron pledged to capture all individuals who incited chaos and hold them accountable for crimes, Euronews reported. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stressed that limited public funds cannot continuously pay for vandal damage. Both Fox News and France 24 reported that President Macron called for calm. Fox News added that authorities have used tear gas and water cannons, making over 8,000 arrests during weeks of violent nationwide clashes. [1][4][6]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, unrest has grown following student demonstrations earlier in the week where around 480,000 people protested across France. Those demonstrations resulted in 11 police officers being hospitalised in Paris after clashes involving fireworks and stones. [12]
Protesters warned that President Macron had reason to tremble following the violence, according to the Telegraph. Le Monde reported that the rift between President Macron and the youth of France is now complete. [2][3]
