Police Service of Northern Ireland officers suspect dissident republicans may be responsible for a viable postal device delivered to a hotel in Londonderry. BBC News reported that the package was discovered at about 15:20 GMT on Tuesday at Ebrington Square in the Waterside. [1]
Ammunition Technical Officers were tasked to the hotel following the discovery of the package. According to BBC News, military experts carried out a controlled explosion on the device before taking it away for forensic examination. [1]
Chief Superintendent Gillian Kearney condemned the incident as shameful and utterly abhorrent, adding that those responsible clearly do not care who or what they harm. BBC News reported that police are keeping an open mind while working through several lines of inquiry. [1]
Breakaway republican groups opposed to ceasefire and peace agreements have continued a low level armed campaign in Northern Ireland since the 1990s. Dissident republicans have frequently targeted security forces and carried out bombings meant to cause disruption. [3]
