Norwegian Nobel Committee prepares to announce 2026 Peace Prize winner

The Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday in Oslo. The Guardian, PBS NewsHour, and ABC News Australia all report that the announcement is scheduled for Friday morning, October 9, 2026. [1][2][4]

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has 287 nominations for this year's award, according to ABC News Australia. ABC News Australia reports that the prize is given every year to individuals or organisations that have worked to advance peace between nations. The Guardian reports that candidates under consideration include Mykola Kuleba and Save Ukraine, Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms, and Yulia Navalnaya. [1][4]

United States President Donald Trump is lobbying for the award and stated that he settled eight wars, according to the Daily Mail, Euronews, and ABC News Australia. However, The Guardian and ABC News Australia report that experts consider him unlikely to win. [1][4][5][6]

Last year's Nobel Peace Prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, PBS NewsHour reported. The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five original awards founded through the will of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel. [2][12]
