NASA featured a self-portrait taken by the Curiosity Rover on Mars as its Astronomy Picture of the Day on October 3, 2026, according to NASA. The photograph was recorded at the south rim of Vera Rubin Ridge during sol 1943 of the rover's exploration across the Martian surface. According to NASA, sol 1943 corresponds to the Earth date January 23, 2018. [1][5]

NASA reported that the mosaicked panorama combines 61 individual exposures taken by the spacecraft. The agency noted that the image was also composed as an interactive 360-degree virtual reality view. NASA explained that a sol is a Martian solar day, which lasts about 40 minutes longer than a standard solar day on Earth. [1]

Vera Rubin Ridge is named in honor of Vera Florence Cooper Rubin, an American astronomer who pioneered research into galaxy rotation rates. She uncovered discrepancies between predicted and observed angular motion of galaxies by studying galactic rotation curves, which provided early evidence for dark matter. [1][6]

Rubin's research on galactic rotation curves established critical evidence supporting dark matter. Subsequent measurements conducted by other astronomers using 21-centimeter hydrogen line radio telescopes clinched the case for dark matter. [6]
