United States President Donald Trump announced that NASA will launch its first nuclear-powered spacecraft to Mars within two years. Fox News reported that Trump spoke at the UP Summit at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Trump stated that the initiative is part of broader effort to expand American space exploration and send astronauts to Mars. [1][3]

The gathering at the key facility on Florida's Space Coast was held as an invitation-only VIP event, according to the Washington Examiner. Fox News reported Trump saying, within the next two years, NASA will launch the first-ever nuclear-powered spacecraft to Mars, reaffirming his administration's goal to build a larger presence beyond Earth. [1][3]

NASA conducts both robotic and crewed missions to explore the solar system. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Japan launched a spacecraft on a five-year mission in October 2026 to study the moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, with plans to bring soil samples back to Earth in 2031. NASA's Curiosity rover previously explored locations on Mars including the Vera Rubin Ridge. [9][10][11]

Trump highlighted the upcoming Mars mission following recent political developments in Washington. The Daily Mail reported that the Republican Party lost control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in midterm elections, driven by voter concern regarding inflation and the war in Iran.
