The Minister of State for Older People, Kieran O'Donnell, officially opened a new 130-bed Health Service Executive facility in Killarney on Thursday. Radio Kerry reported that the new Killarney Community Nursing Unit is located at Ballydribbeen and has housed patients since August. [1]
Radio Kerry reported that construction of the site began in 2022 through a public-private partnership. The project was originally scheduled for completion in 2024, leading to criticism over the time required to finish construction. Kieran O'Donnell stated that lessons will be learned regarding the timeframe of the delivery. [1]
The unit contains 50 long-stay beds, 50 short-stay beds, and 30 dementia care beds, according to Radio Kerry. The station reported that officials expect the facility to be fully operational and fully staffed early next year. [1]
Concerns over local infrastructure follow earlier issues in County Kerry. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Sinn Féin housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin previously called for lessons to be learned after delays occurred in supplying bottled water following saltwater contamination in the Ballyheigue Public Water Supply.
