United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a major speech in Athens, Greece, on Wednesday, urging European nations to increase their defence spending and address regional security threats. According to the New York Post and Euronews, Rubio declared that the Western world is at an inflection point and called on European allies to join the United States in confronting modern security dangers. Euronews reported that Rubio pointed to Greece as a positive example for maintaining higher levels of defence spending. [1][2][3][5]

During his visit to the Greek capital, Rubio held diplomatic discussions on energy supplies, Liquefied Natural Gas, F-35 fighter jets, and military cooperation, as Euronews reported. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported that Rubio also issued a warning to Iran, stating that the nation will never possess a nuclear weapon. Security in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Strait of Hormuz were also central topics on the agenda, according to Euronews. [2][6]

The New York Post reported that Rubio spoke with the Acropolis as a backdrop, making references to classical and American history, including Achilles and the Alamo. The Washington Examiner reported that Rubio spoke from the Pnyx, the hill where ancient Athenian assemblies took place. Ancient Athens was one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities and pioneered the first known democracy in the fifth century BCE. [1][3][11]

Political observers noted the historical tone and setting of the address. The Washington Examiner and The Washington Post reported that the speech generated discussion in Washington regarding Rubio's political future and potential contrasts with Vice President JD Vance ahead of 2028. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Rubio was recently portrayed alongside other Republican leaders in political satire ahead of upcoming midterm elections. [1][4][12][13]
