United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Cubans seeking political change on Friday to discreetly cooperate with the Central Intelligence Agency. Fox News, The Weekly Times, NST Online, CiberCuba, and Asianet Newsable all reported on his public call. Rubio urged Cubans to seize the opportunity to create positive change through a discrete partnership with the intelligence agency. [1][2][3][4][5]
In a post published on social media platform X, Rubio targeted Cubans disappointed by failed promises, corruption, and the privileged lives of a few, according to Fox News. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump separately floated the idea of sending Rubio to the communist-run island to negotiate a deal, Fox News reported. [1]
The diplomatic push comes as more than 1.7 million Cubans reside in the United States as part of a global diaspora exceeding two million people. Recent economic hardship on the island includes hyperinflation exceeding 30 percent annually and poverty rates impacting over 90 percent of households, driving a recent exodus of more than 500,000 people leaving annually since 2022. [6]
Rubio has taken a prominent role in foreign affairs, as FTMQ News reported earlier. He recently held discussions with Lebanese officials after security forces intercepted explosives intended for Hezbollah. [7]
