Lawyers for Luigi Nicholas Mangione filed legal paperwork on Friday, 31 October 2026, seeking to dismiss his state-level criminal charges, according to the Guardian. Defense attorneys cited double jeopardy laws after Mangione entered a federal guilty plea earlier in the year. [1][2]
The Guardian reported that Mangione pleaded guilty on 14 August to federal charges connected to the death of Brian Thompson. Thompson, who was 50 years old and had served at UnitedHealth Group for approximately 20 years, was the chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare. [1][2][3]
The federal plea occurred shortly before Mangione was scheduled to face a state murder and weapons trial on 8 September. A masked gunman shot Thompson outside a Midtown New York City hotel on 4 December 2024 at around 6:45 a.m., shortly before an investor conference. [1][3]
Federal Bureau of Investigation records show the gunman used a 9mm pistol fitted with a silencer to shoot Thompson in the leg and back. Investigators recovered shell casings at the scene marked with the words deny, delay, and depose. [3]
