A pre-match media conference for the Republic of Ireland football team ended abruptly on Saturday following tense exchanges with Israeli journalists ahead of a UEFA Nations League match against Israel. Sky News, BBC Sport, and Al Jazeera all reported that the briefing for Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson was cut short after questions were raised regarding alleged racial abuse and a recent incident on a Flydubai flight. [1][3][4][5][7]

According to Al Jazeera, an Israeli reporter asked Hallgrimsson about an event onboard a Flydubai flight to Israel that took place earlier in the week. Al Jazeera also reported that members of an Israeli media contingent argued with Irish officials and heckled the manager during the event. Sky News and the Irish Independent both reported that the Football Association of Ireland rejected claims of racism. [1][2][3][4]

The UEFA Nations League is an international European football competition played by senior men national teams to replace friendly matches. Political tensions surrounding the upcoming match have grown over criticism from Ireland regarding the war in Gaza, according to Al Jazeera. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the match between Ireland and Israel is scheduled to be played behind closed doors in Serbia. [3][4][11][14]
