Lawmakers approved 11 cabinet portfolios during the session, according to Al Jazeera. The newly appointed ministers include Nayef al-Shammari as defence minister and Yasir al-Maliki as interior minister, alongside ministers for planning, culture, and higher education and scientific research. [1]
Parliament also approved three deputy prime ministers, including senior leader Laith al-Khazali, who is currently under United States sanctions, Al Jazeera reported. A vote on the nominee for migration and displacement minister was postponed because political parties could not reach an agreement. [1]
Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is an Iraqi banker, businessman, and politician who assumed office in 2026. Taking office at the age of 41, he is the youngest prime minister in the history of Iraq. [6]
