Investigators excavating the crash site of a Learjet in Florida have recovered a portion of one engine, the Daily Mail reported on Thursday. All nine people on board died when the jet crashed on Sunday in Palm Beach County near West Palm Beach. The Daily Mail and Fox News both reported that the crash took place after the aircraft experienced an abrupt and violent descent. [1][4][15]

Flight tracking data and air traffic control audio showed the crew contending with icing and turbulence before beginning a climb, according to Fox News. The crew then received an overspeed warning and suffered an in-flight breakup. Fox News also reported that the aircraft flight path ran from Austin, Texas, to its fatal plunge in Greenacres, Florida. Debris was located away from the main impact site, including on nearby roofs, the Daily Mail reported. [1][4]

The aircraft was en route from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when it plummeted in Palm Beach County, as FTMQ News reported earlier. All nine passengers and crew members died in the incident, and the National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation into the crash. [1][4][15][16]

The National Transportation Safety Board stated that officials located the engine portion while excavating the impact area, according to the Daily Mail. Fox News reported that a damaged tail on the Learjet has raised additional questions for investigators as they work to determine the cause of the break-up. [1][2]
