An injured teacher from Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, released a statement on Wednesday detailing her experience during last week's shooting. Fox News reported that Becky Drury recalled trying to close a classroom door before pretending to be dead after being shot at close range, hoping the gunman would not target her again. KHOU also reported that the teacher said she had to pretend to be dead after being shot in the classroom. [1][4]
The attack occurred on October 15, 2026. Griffin J. John II, who was 16 years old, entered the school by jumping over a fence and shooting through glass door panels with a 12-gauge Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun. He entered a special education classroom containing four adults and five children, where he killed three children and a teacher, and injured a student and a teaching assistant. The gunman was then shot and killed by 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco, an armed father of two students who followed him inside. [5]
The victims of the shooting were children aged five, eight, and 11, along with one teacher, as FTMQ News reported earlier. A seven-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were hospitalized in critical condition following the attack. [8]
The Bend Police Department confirmed that the firearm used in the Silver Rail Elementary attack was purchased legally, Fox News reported. [1]
