Hungarian lawmakers elected Péter Fejes as the country's new prosecutor general on Tuesday, Euronews reported. The appointment is part of an anti-corruption drive led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar following the downfall of nationalist ex-leader Viktor Orbán. Fejes, a recently retired career prosecutor, received 139 votes in a secret ballot. [1]

According to Euronews, public trust in the prosecution service declined during Orbán's 16 years in power, as critics accused the centralised authority of protecting his inner circle from investigation. Investigations into high-level corruption are now accelerating, with three former ministers currently in custody. Among those detained is a former central bank governor whom Orbán previously described as his right-hand man. [1]

The anti-graft efforts build on political changes established earlier in 2026. Following a landslide election victory, the Péter Magyar-led Tisza Party created the National Asset Recovery and Protection Office. The autonomous prosecuting agency was set up to investigate the misuse of public assets and recover unlawfully acquired property. Magyar previously joined European leaders to commemorate the 1956 anti-Soviet uprising, as FTMQ News reported earlier. [3][6]

Under the Hungarian constitutional system, executive authority and legislative initiatives are led by the prime minister. The president of Hungary serves primarily as a ceremonial head of state and commander-in-chief, though the office retains the power to veto legislation or submit laws to the Constitutional Court for review.
