Ukraine's parliament passed a law strengthening minority rights on Monday, easing years of tensions with neighbouring Hungary. Euronews reported that the legislation was approved by 266 of the 450 deputies in the Verkhovna Rada. The law strengthens protections for the use of minority languages in educational institutions and at cultural events. [1]
positional approval from Hungary is expected to clear the path for Kyiv to make progress on its path to join the European Union. Euronews reported that diplomats expect Budapest to approve two additional European Union accession clusters on Tuesday. [1]
The diplomatic progress comes alongside potential leadership talks between the two nations. Euronews reported that Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar could meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Brussels on Thursday. [1]
Ukraine has faced ongoing conflict with Russia since 2014, when the Revolution of Dignity led to the removal of President Viktor Yanukovych and prompted Russia to occupy Crimea. As FTMQ News reported earlier, recent Russian strikes killed 33 civilians, leading Ukrainian lawmaker Yulia Klymenko to call for stronger air defences and a return to peace talks. [2][5]
