Demand for affordable housing in Cork has vastly outstripped supply as 1,862 households applied for 85 cost-rental homes, the Irish Examiner reported. The figures from Cork County Council show that less than 5 percent of applicants were successful. [1]
The high volume of interest meant one scheme attracted more than 56 applicants for every home available, according to the Irish Examiner. Local councillors described cost-rental projects as having a small to negligible effect on the broader housing crisis. Cost-rental housing is designed for middle-income households who earn too much to qualify for social housing but struggle to afford private rent. [1]
The update follows wider housing pressure in County Cork. As FTMQ News reported earlier, area councillors in Carrigaline rejected an 8 million euro municipal budget for 2027, citing concerns that funding will fail to support 5,000 homes planned for the region over the next five years. [4]
Cost-rental developments are also being expanded elsewhere in Ireland. As FTMQ News previously reported, applications opened on October 20 for 328 new cost-rental apartments in Shankill, South Dublin, where monthly rents start from 1,495 euros. [3]
