Demonstrators took to the streets across multiple European cities on Saturday, including Milan, Madrid, Lisbon, and Tirana. Euronews reported that people marched over pensions, housing, education, corruption, and opposition to war. France 24 reported that 410,000 people demonstrated across France, including 110,000 in Paris, for a day of rallies focused on purchasing power and public services. Authorities deployed massive police forces and soldiers in several capitals after violence in earlier protests prompted additional security measures, Euronews added. [1][3]
Euronews and France 24 both reported that French police used tear gas against demonstrators. Heavy policing, bans, and precautions failed to prevent violent clashes in several French cities, according to Euronews. Approximately 2,400 people were arrested in France, while nearly 1,000 security personnel and 100 protesters were injured, Euronews reported. [1][3]
Related demonstrations erupted in Spain, following earlier protests in France and Italy, WION reported. Fortune reported that protesters across Europe marched as part of the newly formed Oct. 17 Movement, while Aontacht Media described the continent-wide rallies as a European Spring. High school students in France have been demonstrating against poor school and economic conditions since September 2026, which grew into a nationwide movement involving teachers and trade unions. [1][2][8][11][13]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, thousands of demonstrators previously marched through Madrid from Atocha station toward Calle Alcala to demand higher public pensions and inflation indexation. FTMQ News also previously reported that French and Italian ministers accused foreign powers of using social media to fuel unrest, although European Commission officials said there was no conclusive evidence to support those claims.
