An Garda Síochána is considering appealing a six and a half year prison sentence handed to Abdullah Khan, the Irish Examiner reported. Management at police headquarters may seek an appeal on the grounds of undue leniency. Khan was jailed after stabbing a police officer and firebombing a pub connected to mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor. [1]

The Irish Examiner reported that Khan declared he was a jihadi and shouted Allahu Akbar when he attacked Garda Gary Lynch and Garda Patrick Nevin on Capel Street in Dublin. Khan cut Garda Lynch several times on his right arm during the assault. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the attack occurred in July 2025 and also targeted the Black Forge Inn pub in Drimnagh, south Dublin. [1][5]

Khan received his prison term from the Special Criminal Court after pleading guilty to eight charges, as FTMQ News reported earlier. The charges against him included assault on a garda, arson, and terrorist offences. Khan is the first person in Ireland to be convicted of an Islamist attack under Irish terrorist legislation. [5]

According to the Irish Examiner, Garda headquarters is reviewing its options following the sentencing. The outlet reported that if police management decides to take action, all options will remain open. [1]
